The Northwest United States experienced an explosion in industry in 1850s. Workers came from long distances to take advantage of the newly appreciated resource of lumber. All over the Northwest, logging towns began to pop up as Seattle became a center of logging production. In 1882, the Lake Union Lumber Company built a sawmill on the south shore of the lake, later to be renamed the Western Mill by David Denny in 1884. Lake Union soon became a funnel for nearly all the lumber harvested from the area. Seattle continued to experience booming success in the logging industry until shipbuilding took over in the early 1900s. Seattle was recognized as one of the twenty-five largest cities in the United States by 1910, an achievement undoubtedly due to the success of the logging industry.

“Harmony exists no less in difference than in likeness, if only the same key-note govern both parts.” – Margaret Fuller

Thrice is a body of work that focuses on the ideas of living and working together as one group. The world is made up of many types of people and people groups, all with obvious differences from one another. Thrice, in three forms, each different in shape and made of different types of wood, but all three built with the same care, by the same hands, each having a dependence on one another. Just as Thrice makes one united form with three separate parts, all the people groups of the world make one human race. Though there are obvious differences between the three forms of Thrice, the sculptures only seem to be complete while they are by each other’s sides, working in harmony. While it is important to recognize the differences that make each of us unique it is equally, if not more important to recognize the similarities that we have in common with our neighbors. Not one person would be who they are without the support of the diverse community around them.

Be Near Me from John Howard on Vimeo.
Norma Fisher Corsello was born October 14, 1936 in Ridge Farm, Illinois. While attending University, she met her husband, Joseph Corsello on a blind date. They were married on November 28, 1959 in Penfield, Illinois. Together, they raised three children. She enjoyed reading, quilting and baking.

This video was inspired Norma Corsello's life and a poem from Alfred Lord Tennyson, 'Be Near Me.'

"Be near me when my light is low,
When the blood creeps, and the nerves prick
And tingle; and the heart is sick,
And all the wheels of Being slow.
Be near me when the sensuous frame
Is rack’d with pangs that conquer trust;
And Time, a maniac scattering dust,
And Life, a Fury slinging flame.
Be near me when my faith is dry,
And men the flies of latter spring,
That lay their eggs, and sting and sing
And weave their petty cells and die.
Be near me when I fade away,
To point the term of human strife,
And on the low dark verge of life
The twilight of eternal day."

Stay Home
Stay Home. from John Howard on Vimeo.
This video was inspired by Stay Home , a poem from Wendell Berry.

I will wait here in the fields
to see how well the rain
brings on the grass.
In the labor of the fields
longer than a man's life
I am at home. Don't come with me.
You stay home too.
I will be standing in the woods
where the old trees
move only with the wind
and then with gravity.
In the stillness of the trees
I am at home. Don't come with me.
You stay home too.

Disunity is common in today’s society as individualism and independence are praised. These ideals prohibit us from seeing the importance of community. While we try to do as much as we can by ourselves, we often do not stop to consider what we might be able to accomplish with the help of others. Working together provides a strength that cannot be achieved alone. When people are in accord with one another, there is a support system that is created, making the group able to stand strong as a whole. When one might weaken under the strength of circumstances, having communal support allows that person to share their burden and be able to withstand.

Small fish easily become prey to larger predators. Herring often use a last-ditch defense to survive attacks by joining together in tight clusters so that they appear to be one large and intimidating leviathan. As the fish swim together, they unintentionally create beautiful aggregate forms. Even while under pressure, the fish work together to protect each other. Their common goal is the survival of the community. Humbling themselves for the betterment of the whole, they risk their own livelihood. While operating under the ideals of independence and individualism, we cannot fully grasp the herring’s sense of self-sacrifice. Although working together takes much effort, the rewards are far grander than what we might achieve on our own.
